                   COUNCILMAN SPONSORS
             READ FOR THE RECORD EVENT

San Bernardino, CA – Sixth Ward Councilman Rikke Van Johnson is sponsoring a Read for the Record event at the Inghram Branch Library located at 1505 W. Highland Avenue on Thursday, September 20, 2007 at 10:30 a.m.  All neighborhood pre-school age children and their families are welcome to participate.
Read for the Record was created by an organization called Jumpstart1.  The goal of Jumpstart’s Read for the Record campaign is to raise public awareness about significant disparities in early education.   The program is also a national campaign to engage hundreds of thousands of children and adults in an effort to break the world record for the most children reading the same book on the same day.  The City of San Bernardino is participating for the first time in this program with “San Bernardino Story Time.”
“An early learning gap exists as young as age 3, due primarily to economic inequality.  And because of these early discrepancies in language acquisition and literacy skills, one third of America’s children arrive at their first day of school unprepared to learn,” said Councilman Johnson.  “Awareness about this issue is crucial, as this early learning disparity serves as a critical precursor to our country’s persistent educational achievement gap.”
The City of San Bernardino has partnered with First 5 San Bernardino who has graciously donated books to children who attend.  The campaign’s official book this year is The Story of Ferdinand.  The first 40 children will receive a free book to take home to continue the fun of reading.
